Box Office Report For November 29-December 1

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, buoyed by the Thanksgiving holiday (which I hope you all enjoyed), Disney continued taking in a ton of money for their record breaking animated sequel Frozen II. Going up against the cartoon giant this time around are new releases in an A-list ensemble in Knives Out, as well as a zeitgeist capturing drama in Queen & Slim, plus strong holdovers like A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Ford v Ferrari. How did they all do? Read on to see how the weekend turned out…
(Take note, these are just the three day totals, not the full five day Thanksgiving numbers)
Easily taking first place once again, with another ridiculously big haul, was Frozen II. A shade over $85.2 million brings the domestic total close to the $300 million mark, solidifying this one as another smash hit for Disney. Even if the reviews weren’t quite in line with the first one, audiences have the same appetite for these characters, so huge legs going forward is to be expected!
In second place, exceeding expectations and forecasts, we have Knives Out. Just over $27 million for Rian Johnson’s whodunit is a big win, potentially even setting this up as a franchise, should the filmmaker want to continue the adventures of Daniel Craig’s detective. Perhaps this could even boost its Oscar prospects? Stay tuned…
Ford v Ferrari continued to do solid business, grabbing another $13.2 million. A few more strong weekends will have it break the $100 million mark, a nice signifier for this Academy Award hopeful. Without question, this one benefited from the Thanksgiving holiday, getting families out to see this racing/sports drama.
Fourth place went to A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, drumming up nearly $12 million more for this tribute to the message of Fred Rogers. This film, like the one mentioned previously, had the Thanksgiving holiday help bring in extra audience members, though Mr. Rogers himself is a definite selling point as well, not to mention Tom Hanks. Subsequent holds like this will keep it in the running throughout awards season and prevent it from getting lost in the shuffle.
