Star Wars’ Finn and Poe Won’t Be a Couple in Rise of Skywalker, Says JJ Abrams

Bad news for those hoping Finn and Poe would finally just kiss already in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

While speaking with Variety at the film’s press junket, director J.J. Abrams, along with stars John Boyega (Finn) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), said the two characters will remain platonic in the last film of the Skywalker saga. However, Abrams teased the movie will have some type of LGBTQ representation.

“That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,” the “Rise of Skywalker” director said of Finn and Poe’s relationship. “It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”

While Abrams wouldn’t confirm anything per usual, he expressed that he aspired to find a “Star Wars” cast that “looked more the way the world looks than not.” The filmmaker added, “And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film.”

In response to Abram’s hinting, Variety flat-out asked him about the possibility of a queer character. Replying with a smile, Abrams said, “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”

Although there might be LBGTQ representation in “Rise of Skywalker,” both Isaac and Boyega expressed their feelings about their characters not becoming a couple.

“Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control,” Isaac said. “It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of…I don’t know what. But if they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun.”

“They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it,” Boyega added. “But at the same time, they are just platonic at the moment.”

It looks like “FinnPoe” and “Stormpilot” shippers are going to have to be okay living in the friend zone.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” hits theaters December 20.
